Facing increasing workloads and demand for high quality work, The Inkspot sought a smarter, more cost-effective upgrade path – one capable of delivering modern press performance without the significant investment of a new press.
Director Sheena Canning & Co-Owner Patrick Canning had been considering replacing their 2001 model Komori L28 6-Colour press. With press operator Troy Jones working extended shifts to keep up with volumes, the need for greater automation, colour control, and efficiency was clear.
After careful consultation with the Inkspot team, Ball & Doggett proposed their X-Rite Offset360 ‘Plug & Play’ retrofit. This helped guide The Inkspot’s upgrade by modernising their conventional press with automated colour management, faster setup, and consistent colour standards, all without major downtime or replacement costs.
A Smart Retrofit with Big Impact
Installed in a few hours, X-Rite’s Offset360 ‘Plug & Play’ retrofit integrated directly into The Inkspot’s CTP and press workflow. Onsite training was fast and effective, with Ball & Doggett and X-Rite supporting operations from day one.
X-Rite Offset360 drives precise ink key presets via CIP data and uses an electronic densitometry scanner to automatically maintain LAB and density targets in real time. It also learns press behaviour, identifies press improvement opportunities, and helps operators maintain long-term efficiency.
Outstanding Results: Quality Up, Waste Down, Capacity Unlocked

Since installation, The Inkspot has recorded major production gains, including:
– Make-ready sheets reduced by 50-70%
– Rapid achievement of colour targets
– Precision repeatability for reprints
– Improved colour consistency across all substrates
– Higher throughput and reduced operator load
– Enhanced print quality at greater speed
– Ability to produce high quality work on short print runs bringing in new clientele
Press Operator Troy Jones commented:
“Having operated newer high-spec presses, this upgrade has brought our Komori very close to that same level of performance.”
In conjunction with Troy, his son Trent Jones has joined the team as an apprentice print machinist and is learning the new X-Rite technology.
Ball & Doggett is proud to celebrate the remarkable production and quality transformation achieved by long-standing customer, The Inkspot, an A2 trade printer based on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland.
