Paper postcards that play music

People, this is not a joke or ploy to get you as excited about paper as we are. Not sure that’s possible. We saw this post on one of our trusty client’s newsletters – AVANT Card. They featured a story on Uniform, a UK brand communications agency who have designed a device that plays music which has been printed on a postcard.

Using an emerging technology to print basic electronic circuits and components onto any surface, the paper postcard is docked in the player and you control the tunes by pressing buttons on the postcard. The interaction is very tactile, like the old days when we had vinyl record sleeves (yes, we’re old enough to remember). A little different to the feeling of sliding your finger across a screen. We do get that each has its place. And any homage to the LP is a winner with us.

Kloke’s autum/winter Collection 2013

Agency: Three60
Client: Kloke
Stocks: Strathmore Premium Super Smooth
Printed by: Bambra Press (VIC)

Adam and Amy Coombes share a common passion – they both love fashion and each other! In 2011, this driven and creative couple started Kloke, a Melbourne based clothing label that produces technical garments and tailored detail. Recently, Three60 produced printed piece showcasing Kloke’s Autumn/Winter collection, calling it ‘Dissimulate’.

The A5, 32pp book references the spirit of the brand as a functional and detailed piece. Printed on Strathmore Super Smooth, 352gsm the book is pad bound (also known as cheesecloth). This is where the glue is dyed and the colour is visible on the spine. It also means it can be opened flat for spreads or taken apart and used as individual cards. Printed CMYK plus PMS 172U, we think the PMS has come up a treat, really punchy and rich. Makes buying something even more enticing. Not that we need an excuse.

A glowing result for PointofView

Title: A lighting design PointofView
Agency: Liquorice Studio (VIC)
Client: PointofView
Stocks: HannoArt – Satin
Printed by: Bambra Press (VIC)

This beautiful, show stopping, magnificently crafted book was created for PointofView, a design consultancy who specialise in lighting design, audio visual and theatre systems design. Liquorice Studio in Melbourne are the creators of the book which showcases 10 years of the lighting company’s amazing catalogue of past works. The result is luminous (sorry, we couldn’t help ourselves with that one).

PointofView_6

Liquorice Studio took inspiration from PointofView’s current logo which incorporates a circle motif. They built on the concept of a viewpoint, using light and shadow to create imagery. They had some fun experimenting with angles, focus, light densities and surfaces – which all created a suite of different effects. This is also the method they used to develop a typographic image for each chapter heading.

The finished book is 324 pages and printed on HannoArt. The cover is on 150gsm over an 1800um board weight and the text pages are on 130gsm. “We were drawn to HannoArt for its smooth finish and reliable print quality. We also felt that its bright white colour was perfectly suited for a book about lighting design. We were very impressed with the crisp detail and the rich depth of colour in all the high quality images.”

A special edition ‘glowing’ slip case was developed and the book title laser etched, to align with the printed cover. Pretty cool huh?! We certainly think so!

Bird self promotional posters

Title: Bird promotional posters
Agency: Bird Studios
Client: Self-promotion
Stocks: Keaykolour Original
Printed by: Taylor’d Press (VIC) and foil by Lorimier (VIC)

Let us share with you the excitement that filled the office when one of our much loved paper specialists came into work with the eye catching Bird A3 self-promotional posters. ‘I can choose from four colours?’ people exclaimed. ‘But I like all of them!’ was the common response. Each poster features hand drawn and vector illustrations and a unique fluorescent colour (pink, yellow, green, red) topped off with silver metallic foil. A true project of experimentation which had our paper sensibilities going c-r-a-z-y.

Bird-self-promtional-posters_2

Printed on Keaykolour Original Pure White 120gsm, which for Bird was an economical choice and great feel for a 120gsm paper. Also handy as they sent some out in the post in A5 format so the piece needed to fold down well. Each illustration varies in method and combines individual design elements such as spray paint, brush and ink, pen illustration and computer generated shapes. Experimentation is evident with things like the beautiful abstract bird illustration and typographic elements that creates a piece with energy and beauty.

Bird offset printed the posters using two colours, black and also separate fluorescents for each poster. Luke Carson from Bird mentioned: “We hit the fluorescent colours twice and the black once. The result was an even flat black and really punchy fluorescent colour that lifted off the paper. Further enhancing this was a matte spot varnish on the black and a gloss spot vanish on the fluoros.” Safe to say, we likey.

Poppy Calhoun collateral

Title: Poppy Calhoun stationery project
Stocks: Buffalo Board / Buffalo Kraft
Printed by: Print Corner (VIC) – A4 folio covers

Poppy Calhoun (whose name we just love) recently completed a project as part of her diploma of graphic design at Swinburne University. The items included a mini folio, CV, business card, letter head and envelopes. See above for a winning example of creating something eye catching on a minimal budget that looks amazing and reflects individual personality. Score.

Poppy_2

Choosing Buffalo Board 332gsm was a point of difference for Poppy for both textural and environmental reasons. Combining this with a custom made stamp (from Simon Stamps in the USA) provided texture and personality and just the right amount of home made feel. She even stamped and hand cut all of her business cards and other branded pieces herself. She printed the letterhead on her home inkjet on the Buffalo Kraft 80gsm, used her local printer for the A4 folio covers which are printed in black and white, then hand stitched the binding using red thread.

A lot of work yes, but Poppy has clearly put her heart into this little suite of design goodness that we’re chuffed she’s used our stock for.

Sow ‘n Sow cards – design that grows

Title: Gifts of Seeds and Australian Native cards
Agency: Sow ‘n Sow
Stocks: Enviro Board
Printed by: MJ Printing (VIC) and Moule Print (VIC)

We love hearing inspiring stories and Michelle Brady is a woman with one such story to tell. Her dream to combine her penchant for gardening, be a business owner and pursue her creative passions became an everyday reality. She created Sow ‘n Sow, a Melbourne company that produces the ‘Gifts of Seeds’ card collection. The packets of seeds are beautiful enough to be given as a gift yet they’re a card too! She recently released an Australian Natives collection as well.

Sow_5

This innovative idea stemmed (pardon the pun) from both her new found interest in gardening and the birthday presents she would give away to friends and family that were packets of seeds. Her idea simply blossomed (ahem) from there. Michelle can tailor the seed packets to any particular project or corporate promotion. She once created mint seed packets at an event for Bacardi, to encourage people to make their own Mojito cocktail. Now, why didn’t we think of that?!

Created in collaboration with designer and illustrator Daniella Germain, the ranges feature really lovely illustrations. The ‘Gift of Seeds’ illustrations are collages which give the packets a 3D effect and for the Australian Natives collection, the inspiration came from botanical illustrations so the intention was for an earthier, more understated feel.

Michelle mentioned to us: “The focus was very much on the item being a gift, so we kept a minimal layout and let the illustrations speak for themselves. Enviro Board 230gsm was an easy choice for the packets, because of its eco-friendly credentials, 100% recycled factor as well as its earthy look and feel.” The ‘Gifts of Seeds’ cards were printed offset with a double hit of opaque white, then CMYK. The Australian Native packets were printed offset plus CMYK.

We’ve spotted these little beauties around town recently and they look even more special in person!

Massimo Vignelli makes books

Part of Mohawk’s campaign ‘What will you make today?’ includes this video about designer Massimo Vignelli and his approach to book design. The short clip, created by Pentagram’s Michael Bierut and team, follows Massimo’s passion and unique method of designing books.

This video is an animation of one of Massimo’s classic designs showcasing architect, Richard Meier, as an example. Each page is drawn in pencil (as Massimo finds doing this by hand much faster than with a computer) and uses a grid as a guide for the initial layout stage. The grid determines the position of the photographs and “…is an integral part of book design. It’s not something that you see. It’s just like underwear: you wear it, but it’s not to be exposed. The grid is the underwear of the book.” Massimo explains while chuckling in the video.

Michael and his team at Pentagram created a corresponding journal featuring the grid, beautifully carried through to the front and back covers with a debossed effect applied. This limited edition journal is available from Mohawk’s website.

The ‘What will you make today?’ campaign launched last year together with Mohawk’s new identity. Stay tuned for more short clips planned later this year.

The Catch Up Notes Co. branding

Agency: Lure Graphics
Client: The Catch Up Notes Co.
Stocks: Concept Vellum

The Catch Up Notes Co. is a new company specialising in stationery and one of our fave stationery items – sticky notes, recently approached Lure Graphics (a design studio in Melbourne) and asked them to create a brand new identity for their company. It was important to The Catch Up Notes Co. to draw attention to the paper and printing process. After all, stationery is their business!

After brain storming a range of ideas, Lure Graphics decided to amplify the sticker-like aesthetic of the branding and emboss the logo. Concept Vellum – Radiance 352gsm (now called Strathmore Premium Wove) was chosen for its warm tone and subtle texture, which complimented the rubine red and black hues perfectly. The paper choice, emboss and colour palette became a match made in heaven! Everything came together, demonstrating the attention to detail that The Catch Up Notes Co. is known for. Overall, Lure Graphics wanted to embrace the confidence in the brand and give it a fresh, strong presence that communicates professionalism. An element they bring to all their stationery notes.

JPP Synthetic – H Grade is back!

Title: JPP Synthetic – H Grade is back!
Stocks: JPP Synthetic – C Grade / JPP Synthetic – H Grade / JPP Synthetic – T Grade

We had a lot of fun working on our latest promotion for JPP Synthetic, a range of polypropylene paper products. The big news is H Grade is back! JPP Synthetic is available in H, T and C Grades, all strong, durable and water resistant, yet each has their own unique qualities.

The promotion includes a target shooting set, water pistol and shelf wobblers. An A5 postcard was also printed to be included within the K.W.Doggett Fine Paper JPP Synthetic swatch. The original concept of this promotion came from Sam Barnes, the winner of a student competition in 2010. Sam’s unique design was re-worked to suit the announcement that H Grade is back and this is what he came up with!

JPP Synthetic is a high tear resistant product, with superior printing and drying capabilities. H Grade features a clay matt coating on both sides of the sheet. Print it with conventional printing processes and inks and deliver end uses like menus, maps, shelf wobblers, plant and industrial tags or labels and point of sale signage. H Grade is also suitable for folding and hole punching, as well as packaging applications.

T Grade has a semi-gloss finish and is similar to C Grade which has a matt finish, but is slightly denser. This  makes T Grade whiter, more opaque, flexible and difficult to tear. C Grade is stiff with a cardboard type quality and suited for applications that require rigidity, such as book covers and food menus. The entire JPP Synthetic range is suitable for both indoor and outdoor purposes.

If you’d like to know more about our JPP Synthetic range, contact our Business Development Manager and synthetic expert, Chris Jackson on (03) 8470 2244.

Woolwich Pier Hotel direct mail campaign

TitleWoolwich Pier Hotel direct mail piece
AgencyMatter Design (QLD)
Client: Woolwich Pier Hotel
Stocks: Knight – Vellum

Here’s a direct mail piece that must have had thousands of people in the Lower North Shore and Ryde areas wanting a beer and hearty pub meal! Printed on Knight – Vellum 200gsm, the piece is a 7pp concertina fold with perf, created for one of Sydney’s most iconic pubs, the Woolwich Pier Hotel. The studio behind it is Matter Design (who also designed the hotel’s website and promotional posters).

Woolwich_5

Matter Design was asked to develop a new style to attract an audience over the Christmas and New Year period. The brief was to take a typographical approach and still have that traditional English feel but with a modern twist. Mission accomplished! You may recognise some of the free Conqueror typefaces that were used – Carved and Inline. Other fonts include Wisdom Script and League Gothic.

The Knight range is known for its tactility and elegant nature, factors that Matter Design took into account. They wanted people to pick up the piece and interact with it so Knight – Vellum was a good choice for them. The client provided creative freedom in all respects which made for a very happy design studio. It’s clear in the outcome – such a fun colour palette and lovely typography, quite different to regular pub branding.

Given the large print run (14,000), the job was offset printed by Lindsay Yates Group. Alyce Biggs from Matter Design explains: “The colours were practically spot on with the Pantone breakdowns on the 7 spot Heidelberg Speedmaster. The printer has great attention to detail and a great technical system so our CMYK was as close to the Pantone as it could be.”

We hope Matter Design keep producing such beautiful printed pieces. We like them a lot.
